Retaining Wall Subsurface Drainage Installation
Water that sits behind a wall will always cause damage. We remove that water before it gets a chance to build up pressure.
Our crew digs a trench along the back side of your wall. We use a handheld gasoline powered trenching machine with a 36 inch digging bar to cut through the clay soil cleanly. Next, we place a perforated PVC drainage pipe wrapped in geotextile filter fabric at the bottom of the trench. The fabric acts as a filter so that mud and sand stay out of the pipe. Also, we pack clean gravel around the pipe to help water drain fast. This means that rain flows down and away from the wall instead of pressing against it. This drainage work follows City of Sacramento Standard Construction Specifications Section 15, which sets the depth, grade, and backfill standards for underground pipe installations.
Polyurethane Foam Void Filling and Soil Underpinning
When soil washes out from behind or beneath a wall, it leaves hollow spaces. Those voids make the wall unstable and cause the ground above to drop. We fill every gap from the outside without digging up your yard.
We bring in a custom built mobile trailer containing a proportioning pump and 200 feet of heated hose to move the fill material to the injection point. Next, we pump a two part hydrophobic expanding polyurethane geopolymer injection resin through small drill ports in or near the wall. The foam expands into every open cavity and presses against loose soil to compact it. Also, this material repels water after it heals. This means that the voids stay filled even when the next rainy season arrives. This process follows City of Sacramento Standard Construction Specifications Section 40-3.02, which defines the minimum soil density levels we must reach after stabilization.
Riprap and Gabion Retaining Wall Stabilization
Walls near creeks, drainage channels, or runoff paths face moving water at the base. That water scours away the soil around the footing. Over time, the footing loses its support and the wall sinks. We protect the base with heavy rock armor.
We use a heavy duty hydraulic crawler excavator with a rotating rock grapple attachment to place large granite stones along the base of the wall. Next, we set double twisted hexagonal woven steel wire gabion baskets filled with rock against the wall footing and along the stream bank. Also, we place geotextile fabric under the rock layer to stop fine soil from washing through. This means that fast moving water runs over the rock instead of cutting into the ground beneath the wall. This work satisfies Sacramento County Department of Water Resources Improvement Standards Section 9, which sets the rock size, wire gauge, and placement depth for riprap bank protection.
Segmental Block and Gravity Wall Realignment
Retaining walls built from stacked blocks can shift when the base soil moves. Sections tilt, slide forward, or spread apart. We take the damaged sections apart and rebuild them on a corrected foundation.
We use a hand cranked heavy duty mechanical wall pulling winch with a 50 foot steel cable to hold the surrounding panels in place while we work on the shifted section. Next, we compact the base soil and lay down a high density polyethylene geogrid soil reinforcement mesh between block layers. The mesh locks the blocks together so they cannot slide forward again. Also, we clean every block face before restacking. This means that the repaired wall looks clean and sits level. This rebuilding follows California Building Code Section 1905, which defines how reinforced block structures must interlock to handle lateral soil loads.
Helical Tieback and Structural Anchor Installation
A wall that leans forward needs something to pull it back and hold it straight. We anchor the wall deep into the stable soil behind it.
We run a high torque hydraulic drive motor attachment mounted on a mini excavator to spin steel anchors through the clay and into solid ground. Next, we connect a hot dip galvanized steel helical tieback anchor rod to the face of the wall. We tighten the rod until the wall pulls back into a plumb position. Also, the hot dip galvanizing protects the steel from rusting inside wet clay. This means that the anchor stays strong through many wet and dry seasons. This repair method meets California Building Code Section 1807.2, which sets the load requirements for lateral support systems in retaining structures.
